Re-ranking and late interaction

First stage retrievers (dense or hybrid) are fast but coarse. They return candidates quickly using compressed representations (embedding vectors or inverted indices). A re ranker performs a second, more precise scoring pass over the top k candidates, improving precision at the cost of additional latency.
